Melanocytes, also called pigment cells, make pigment. This makes your skin brown in the sun, but it can also cause discolorations or pigment spots. These pigment cells are located in the lower layer of the epidermis. The production of pigment is stimulated by the UV radiation from the sun and sunbeds. This can cause pigmentation spots. Irritation or hormones can also cause pigmentation to appear. Pigment spots that are caused by too much exposure to UV radiation can be treated well with IPL.

Cause of pigmentation spots

Cause of pigmentation spots

There are numerous causes that can lead to the development of pigmentation spots. The two best known are exposure to UV radiation and hormonal influences. The pregnancy mask or melasma (pigmentation spots in the face after pregnancy or other hormonal fluctuations) is a good example of this. But irritation of the skin due to, for example, wounds, acne or (operation) scars can also cause pigmentation spots. This is also called post inflammatory hyperpigmentation and is the result of inflammation. In addition to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, age spots are also a well-known form of pigmentation. This form of pigmentation is also known as lentigo solaris. Lentigo solaris mainly develops from middle age. Pigmentation spots caused by too much UV radiation can usually be found on hands, face and décolleté.

A pigmentation spot treatment with IPL is usually recommended when you want to have lentigo solaris treated.

Which treatment against pigmentation spots is most suitable for you?
During an initial consultation, it is discussed what should be achieved with the treatment of pigmentation spots. In addition, the causes that apply to someone and the (im)possibilities of a treatment of the pigment spots are also discussed. For example, if you want to remove a pregnancy mask, you need a different treatment than if you want to have age-related pigment spots removed. There will be clear information about which treatment against pigmentation spots is best for you: IPL or peelings. A skin scan is also performed. In this way, the condition of the skin and the pigment spots are clearly visualized. This allows the treatment to be perfectly tailored to the skin.

How does the IPL treatment or peeling against pigment spots work?

How does the IPL treatment or peeling against pigment spots work?

A treatment is performed without anesthetic and takes an average of fifteen to thirty minutes. For the most optimal result, three to four treatments are usually required. The pigment spots are faded with the help of IPL or peelings. In this way pigmentation is effectively tackled. After the treatment of the pigment spots with IPL, slight redness and swelling may occur. However, this disappears over time. The pigment becomes a lot darker after an IPL treatment. This disappears after 7 – 10 days. After you have had the treatment with IPL or peels, the skin should not be exposed to the sun for a period of six weeks. The use of a good sunscreen with a high protection factor is mandatory.
