What is Botox?
Botox is the brand name of the Botulinum Toxin type A that is used for wrinkle treatments at Kliniek Dokter Frodo. Other Botulinum Toxin brands include Azzalure, Dysport, and Bocouture. Botox not only inhibits the muscle movements that cause wrinkles, but is also used against migraines, excessive sweating, and teeth grinding.
How does Botox work?
Wrinkles disappear because Botox, Botulinum Toxin, blocks the transfer of impulses from nerve to muscle, which causes the muscle to be temporarily weaker. Botulinum Toxin is a protein that is produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum. This protein is injected into the muscle fibres that are responsible for the lines resulting from facial expressions (such as frown lines and crow’s feet) in very small amounts.
In addition, the effect of Botox is used to block the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands, which prevents them from producing sweat.
The Botox treatment
During your first visit to Kliniek Dokter Frodo, prior to a treatment, there is always a consultation first. During the treatment, the Botox is injected directly into the muscle with a thin needle. The treatment takes approximately ten minutes.
Most people we have treated describe the Botox treatment as small pinpricks that do not hurt much. Anaesthetic is not necessary.
When does Botox begin to work?
The effect of the treatment occurs begins 48 hours after the injection and is optimal after 10 to 14 days. The effect of Botox lasts 3 to 6 months in most cases.
After a few months, the muscle activity fully recovers and the effect of the treatment wears off. With regular treatment with Botox, the active ingredient remains active for longer. However, the result of Botox is never permanent.

After the treatment
It is important that you do not lie down during the first two hours after a treatment with Botulinum Toxin (Botox). It is also unwise during these two hours to exercise intensively or drink alcohol, and the sun is best avoided. You cannot massage the area, but you can actively contract the treated muscles (e.g. by frowning a lot, raising the eyebrows, or squinting). This may cause the Botox to work longer.
