We can use dermal fillers to help you to age gracefully

Fillers (injectables) are wrinkle fillers made using an endogenous gel called hyaluronic acid. We can use fillers to restore facial contours and fill wrinkles, lines, or folds. Kliniek Dr Frodo only uses top hyaluronic acid brands: Juvederm and Restylane. There is ample evidence supporting the long-term safety of hyaluronic acids.

Treatment areas

Treatment areas

Below is an overview of the areas that we can treat with fillers at Kliniek Dr Frodo.

Types of filler treatments

Types of filler treatments

At Kliniek Dr Frodo, all of our fillers are made with hyaluronic acid. We split our treatments into several different types:

Fillers for wrinkle treatment

We can use a thin hyaluronic acid (Juvederm Volite, Juvederm Volbella) to beautifully fill minor facial wrinkling, including fine lines around your mouth. The doctors at Kliniek Dr Frodo will work with you to decide which treatment is the best fit.

Fillers for eye bags

Fillers can also be used to treat volume loss, such as eye bags. The hyaluronic acid fillers will restore your skin and give you a fresh look.

Fillers for contour restoration

Ageing changes and reduces the underlying tissue and fat supporting the face. The skull shrinks and subcutaneous fat slowly disappears. But the skin doesn’t shrink with it, causing the body to develop ‘excess’ skin.

Your cheekbones will become a little less prominent, your forehead starts to narrow from volume loss in the temples, and your chin will get smaller. We can restore that volume using fillers to add volume where it is missing (check out our blog on facial ageing for more information).

Why get facial fillers at Kliniek Dr Frodo?

We take a holistic approach to facial treatments. For natural-looking filler results, it is important to restore what has changed about the facial structure (which can be caused by ageing, among other things). We look at each of the different facial zones: bone structure, musculature, and subcutaneous fat are all a part of your appearance.

During your initial consultation, we will cover all facets of the filler treatment, including expected results, how long the treatment will last, and any side effects. Our consultations are always no obligation, for you and the doctor. Expectations are very important. That is why Kliniek Dr Frodo has plenty of satisfied customers and 9+ ratings from more than 900 clients.

Once we have a clear picture of your expectations, we will conduct a and discuss your health, as well as the pros and cons of the treatment.

Based on your anatomy, expectations, financial situation, and available treatments, we consider which treatment is best for you (sometimes we even choose not to provide any treatments).
To ensure that treatment results are beautiful, natural, and safe, we will draw up a treatment plan for the filler treatments that is divided into several steps.

Once we have drawn up a treatment plan, we can start treatment right away if you like.

Safe treatment

The fillers we use at Kliniek Dr Frodo are very safe. We only use Juvéderm and Restylane. These two hyaluronic acid brands have been on the market for a long time, which means they have been proven safe over the long term. There have been more than 20 million treatments done with these fillers worldwide. Hyaluronic acid fillers are non-permanent fillers that are slowly broken down by the body over time. There is minimal risk of allergic reactions, as hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in the skin. Hyaluronic acid can also be actively dissolved with Hyason, and irregularities or over-corrections are easily remedied.

All of the products we use have been extensively tested in clinical trials and been demonstrated safe for cosmetic use. The fillers stay in place and there is minimal risk of complications if used correctly.

I was actually against cosmetic treatments, but I was really struggling with eye bags so I decided to go ahead and get it done. I was treated with 3 ml of hyaluronic acid fillers under my eyes and the results look fantastic, if I do say so myself.

Before, during, and after filler treatment

Before treatment

Before the treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers, you will have another brief consultation with the specialist to go over the treatment, discuss which areas we will be treating, and what you can expect.

To prevent bruising:

  • Start taking Arnica (10 drops, 3 times a day) 5 days before treatment.
  • Stop taking dietary supplements, vitamins, and fish oil 3 days before treatment.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before treatment.
  • You can take 1 x 10 mg Cetirizine tablet on the day of treatment to help prevent swelling.
  • Avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as aspirin, naproxen, or ibuprofen (if possible).

The treatment

Treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers takes about 30 to 45 minutes. The length of treatment depends on how many zones we treat.

During the treatment, we will inject the filler into the skin with an ultra-thin (cannula) needle, so you will barely feel it. The filler contains a local anaesthetic.

Most people say they are afraid of the pain. But after treatment, nearly everyone says they felt nothing, and certainly no pain.

After hyaluronic acid filler treatment

Treatment results will be immediately visible, although it is possible that there may be some unevenness in the first few hours.

To best protect your skin after the treatment, we recommend that you follow these recommendations:

  • Cool the treated area for 10-30 minutes immediately after filler treatment.
  • Don’t exercise on the day of treatment.
  • Don’t touch the treated area or use make-up in the first few hours after treatment.
  • Stay out of the tanning bed and sauna and don’t schedule aesthetician appointments for 7 days.
  • Avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight for the first week.
  • Use sunscreen with high SPF for the first few weeks to protect your skin.

Recovery time

Swelling or bruising may occur. Swelling may last anywhere from several hours to a few days. You can camouflage any bruising after a few hours. You will start to notice results after 2 weeks, and after 6 to 8 weeks, you will see the final results. We will schedule a check-up appointment 6 weeks out, which is something we will discuss during the consultation.

How long will the results last?

The results of the fillers will be visible for at least 24 months. Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body, it is slowly broken down by your body’s hyaluronidase.

I’ve been complaining to my partner for years about how tired my eye bags make me look. I heard about Dr Frodo through the grapevine and found somewhere I could really get proper treatment. I was treated with a combination treatment of fillers and the Eye Regen treatment.

Risks and side effects

Risks and side effects

The most common side effects are localised redness and swelling. You may also experience some soreness.

There is a small risk of bruising. Side effects usually resolve within 2 to 7 days. Bruising won’t negatively affect the final results, and it is often easy to camouflage.

Permanent fillers contain substances that aren’t naturally occurring in the body and aren’t broken down by the body. Permanent fillers have been banned in the Netherlands since 2017, which is why we don’t use them at Kliniek Dr Frodo.

Some possible risks that come with permanent fillers (that can even happen years later) include infections, lumps, and (excessive) capsular contracture around the injected filler. If the skin continues to age, or loosens with significant weight fluctuation, the injected substance can start to become visible as lumps under the skin. Negative media coverage about fillers is almost always about permanent fillers.

Types of injectables

We specialise in several different types of injectables at Kliniek Dr Frodo. Injectables are products that are injected using a needle or a cannula. We use cannulas and very small needles to reduce pain and limit the risk of bruising.

Injectables can be divided into two broad categories: fillers and Botulinum Toxin (Botox). Fillers or wrinkle fillers are made with hyaluronic acids. Botulinum Toxin, or Botox, inhibits the muscle movement that causes wrinkles. Botox is mainly used to correct crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines.

The word injectable is mainly used to refer to fillers.

Difference between Botox and fillers

Botox and fillers are both used to reduce wrinkles. Both kinds of injectables can be used one after the other, and both products also lose their efficacy over time and will eventually need to be reapplied to maintain the same results.

The perfect treatment for certain wrinkles is often a combination of Botox and a filler. By first weakening the muscles with Botulinum Toxin and then firming up the skin around the wrinkle with a filler, we can produce excellent results.

Frequently Asked Questions about Fillers

What are injectables? And what is the difference between fillers and Botox?

Injectable is an overarching term for products that are injected through a needle. Fillers are not the same as Botox. Fillers fill in wrinkles and can also be used to fill lips, cheeks, and cheekbones. Botox relaxes the muscles in the face that cause wrinkles.

Which fillers does Kliniek Dr Frodo use?

At Kliniek Dr Frodo, we use temporary fillers made with hyaluronic acid, such as Juvéderm and Restylane.

We use only proven wrinkle fillers with demonstrated safety and effectiveness from clinical studies, and that have been used in more than 20 million treatments worldwide with long-lasting results.

Which wrinkles can be treated with fillers?

Fillers can be used on a range of wrinkles, but we often use them to reduce lines and wrinkles in the face, to reduce lines around the mouth, to make eye bags and dark circles disappear, to create fuller lips and reshape facial contours, and to fill cheekbones/cheeks.

What is the difference between Juvéderm and Restylane?

Juvéderm and Restylane are both brands of hyaluronic acid fillers. Both are used to replenish lost volume. The difference is in the size of the particles of the fillers. The particles in Juvéderm Volbella fillers are very small, which makes them perfect for lip and under-eye treatments. Restylane has slightly larger particles, so it is a good solution for multiple lines and larger volumes.

Why are permanent fillers banned?

Permanent fillers are made from substances that do not occur naturally in the body and aren’t broken down by the body. This increases the risk of complications like infections, lumps, and (excessive) capsular contracture around the injected filler. Some complications may even occur years later. If the skin continues to age, or loosens with significant weight fluctuation, the injected substance can start to become visible as lumps under the skin.

With temporary hyaluronic acid fillers, those complications are almost non-existent. And if side effects do develop, temporary fillers can easily be dissolved.

What does filler treatment cost?

The price of a filler treatment depends on the treatment and your personal needs and facial features.

See our overview of filler treatment prices here.

How do I prepare for a filler treatment?

Please arrive at the clinic 15 minutes before the treatment. We can apply anaesthetic cream (Emla) prior to treatment if needed.

To prevent bruising:
– Stop all supplements, vitamins, and fish oil 5 days before the treatment.
– Don’t drink alcohol 48 hours before treatment.
– Don’t take blood-thinning medications like aspirin, naproxen, or ibuprofen. If necessary, take paracetamol.

How does the filler treatment work?

We will go over everything with you again prior to the treatment. During the treatment, the filler will be applied in or under the skin with small injections.

How long does the filler treatment last?

How long the treatment lasts depends on the specific treatment. Please be sure to arrive at the clinic at least 15 minutes before the appointment. We can apply anaesthetic cream (Emla) prior to treatment if needed.

We will go over everything with you again prior to the treatment. You can cool the treated area for 10-30 minutes immediately after treatment.

Is filler treatment painful?

Filler treatments aren’t generally painful. You may initially feel a small prick, but it will last only briefly. Juvéderm contains lidocaine, which temporarily numbs the tissue.

Will I be anaesthetised?

Treatment with fillers does not require anaesthesia. Juvéderm contains lidocaine, which temporarily numbs the tissue. We can also apply anaesthetic cream (Emla) prior to the treatment if necessary.

Will I look presentable after filler treatment?

Your skin is likely to be a bit red and swollen after the treatment, but that will fade quickly. If you have thinner skin, bruising may occur at the injection site that will be visible for a few days, but won’t affect the results. It is also easy to camouflage with make-up. You can limit side effects by taking the right precautions.

When will the treatment results be visible?

You will see results immediately after treatment. Your skin may still be a little red and swollen at first, but the results will be clearly visible after 1-3 days. After 2 weeks, we will evaluate the results at your follow-up appointment.

What are the risks of filler treatments? Is the treatment safe?

At Kliniek Dr Frodo, we use hyaluronic acid fillers. These fillers are made with a substance that occurs naturally in the body, which reduces the risk of side effects. However, there is still a slight chance of lumps, infection, or an allergic reaction. All of our fillers are soluble. The most common side effects are swelling, redness, and bruising and sensitivity. These side effects will usually resolve within 2 to 7 days.

What happens if I have an allergic reaction to the filler?

An allergic reaction to fillers can look like a red, swollen area that may feel slightly painful. In its mildest form, this is a normal reaction to filler treatment that will last a few days. If it gets worse and you feel like it isn’t ‘normal’, call us. We can easily dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers using an enzyme called hyaluronidase. It removes the filler immediately, and symptoms will disappear in a few days.

How long do treatment results last?

A filler treatment is a long-term treatment. Depending on the filler, the results will last for about a year. Results will slowly diminish from that point on.

Treatment life can vary significantly from person to person and will usually be much longer. After a year, the filler will still be there, but you will need touch-up treatment to maintain results.

What if I am not satisfied?

We guarantee our results. If you are not satisfied with the results and want to reverse the treatment, we can dissolve the hyaluronic acid with hyaluronidase without issues or residual symptoms.

Can I have filler treatments during pregnancy?

We can’t treat you if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, or if you are still breastfeeding. It has not been proven that fillers are harmful to the baby, but there is no evidence to the contrary, either. We will not take that risk.

Can I go to the sauna or tanning bed after a filler treatment?

After a filler treatment, we recommend putting off trips to the sauna or the tanning bed for a week. After a week, you can feel free to return with no problem.

Can I exercise after the filler treatment?

Theoretically, you can start exercising immediately after a filler treatment, but we don’t recommend it.

Can I see the aesthetician for something like a connective tissue massage?

Facial massages are not recommended in the first few weeks after treatment. A relaxing facial massage is fine after a few weeks, but we don’t recommend connective tissue massage. If you do decide to get a massage, we recommend sharing what kind of treatment you have had with the aesthetician so they can keep it in mind when treating you.
