Dark circles under the eyes

Removing or reducing dark circles under the eyes

Circles under the eyes occur not only with people who do not sleep enough or are unhealthy. Even with people who live healthy and get adequate rest, dark circles or spots under the eyes can emerge. At Kliniek Dokter Frodo, you can have dark spots and circles under your eyes reduced or even removed with the help of hyaluronic acid fillers, carboxy therapy, lasering, and the Eye Regen treatment. With our circles treatment, you will soon look radiant again.

Dark circles or puffiness under the eyes?

When people say they are suffering from puffiness, it often concerns dark circles under the eyes instead. Puffiness and dark circles under the eyes are often confused with each other. Puffiness are when the area under the eyes is thickened, and dark circles are shadowy grey rings right underneath the lower eyelid.

Phases of dark circles under the eyes

Phase 1: Early circle formation under the eyes

In the early stage, dark circles under the eyes can easily be treated. The skin under the eyes usually becomes fully smooth. After the treatment, the use of a covering or camouflaging agent is no longer necessary. In the first phase, it is often difficult to notice that you have undergone cosmetic treatment, even though the circles have disappeared. In this stage, makeup is also a good remedy for dark circles under the eyes; however, this solution is a bit less obvious for men.

Phase 2: Dark circles under the eyes

In the second phase, the dark circles are slightly deeper into the skin. The best way of treating dark circles in this phase is to use fillers with hyaluronic acid. The effect is clearly visible, although your environment will not immediately notice.

Phase 3: Deep and dark blue circles under the eyes

In the third phase, the dark circles are much more serious than in the previous phases. Fillers will reduce the dark circles, but they will never completely go away. In order to reduce the swelling, in some cases, we recommend undergoing the treatment twice. The result is clearly visible and there will be a clear improvement.
We can further improve the quality of the skin with a combination of lasering and carboxytherapy.

Phase 4: Very deep and dark blue circles under the eyes

In the fourth phase, the dark circles are very serious. The black circles or sometimes the dark spots under the eyes are deep inside the skin and an improvement with only fillers is often impossible. At this stage, a surgical eyelid correction should be considered.

Circles under the eyes treatments

To determine which treatment is most suitable for you, there will first be a free initial consultation. Based on the personal treatment plan we determine together with you, we choose from the following treatments:

Fillers under the eyes

Dark circles are often caused by a volume deficiency under the eyes. This creates a shadow under the eyes that is difficult to cover with makeup or to camouflage with concealer (a skin-coloured cream). If the volume deficiency is only visible in the corner and edge of the eye, we can fully remedy this using fillers based on hyaluronic acid, a qualitty and safe filler that stimulates the production of collagen. For filling, we use Juvéderm or Restylane.

The circles under the eyes disappear because the countours of the cheeks to the eyes flow well again. In some cases, the volume deficiency is a bit more spread out and the tiredness shadow runs all the way to the cheek. The cheekbone is then right behind the lower eyelid. To achieve a proper effect, the cheekbone and/or the cheeks also need to be filled using the Angel Lift, a form of lift which counteracts gravity and focuses on recovering the shape and youthfulness of the face.

What can you expect from a filler treatment for dark circles under the eyes?

The treatment takes approximately fifteen minutes. When filling up the volume deficiency, we use a cannula (a medical instrument) which reduces the risk of swelling and bruising to a minimum. The hyaluronic acid filler is applied under the eyes, which removes the blue under your eyes as well as any imbalances. The recovery time is very short and the result is immediately visible. The hyaluronic acid under the eyes is slowly degraded over 18 to 24 months.

Carboxy therapy and laser treatment for dark circles under the eyes

Carboxy therapy consists of injecting the skin with carbon dioxide and is used for removing dark circles under the eyes. A series of three carboxy treatments is often sufficient. This allows is to properly get rid of dark circles under the eyes. Fine lines and wrinkles under the eyes also improve because the skin becomes tighter. Dark, blue circles are reduced because blood circulation is stimulated.

With a laser treatment , we are able to remove dark circles that are caused by pigment. With dark circles and weakening skin under the eyes, we can use Laser to tighten the skin under the eyes and improve the colour under the eyes. We do this by stimulating the lower skin layers with laser. This stimulates the production of new collagen and reduces the pigment under the eyes.

Our laser treatments can be safely combined with botox, fillers and/or carboxy therapy.
Previously, it was not safe to laser the eyelids because at the time, we were using an external eye cup to protect the eyes. An internal eye cup, which is placed under the eyelids and you will barely even feel, has been specially developed for the treatment of eyelids.

What can you expect from a carboxy treatment or lasering for circles?

The carboxy treatment or laser treatment takes only several minutes. Immediately after the treatment, the skin is slightly red and swollen. After 15 minutes, the swelling disappears and you can resume your daily activities. The natural result ensures that the dark circles under your eyes are reduced and that wrinkles under the eyes become softer.

‘During puberty, I began to suffer from circles under my eyes. It seemed to be getting worse every year. Because my father also suffered from these, I thought it was genetic. After visiting Kliniek Dokter Frodo, I was told that this was fairly easy to solve, and that it is also done for men. The carboxy therapy was recommended to me. The treatment was short, and the circles are truly much better now.’

Eye Regen treatment under the eyes

The Eye Regen treatment is a new treatment for a tired appearance that is caused by dark circles under the eyes. The Eye Regen treatment strengthens, rejuvenates, and hydrates the skin. Eye Regen consists of a combination of three treatments: PRP, hyaluronic acid, and micropuncture.

PRP

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP consists of filtered plasma from your own blood. This plasma contains a high concentration of blood platelets and active growth factors. These play an important role in the recovery process of the body. PRP injections in the skin have a rejuvenating, strenghtening, and hydrating effect, giving you a radiant and tighter skin. The treatment originates from dentistry and orthopedics, where using the body’s own blood plasma and platelets to improve recovery has been a common practice for years.

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of the building blocks of the body. It is not only present in the skin, but also in our connective tissue, nerve tissue, and epithelial tissue. Hyaluronic acid provides flexibility and resilience in the skin. The body continuously produced hyaluronic acid, but as we age, this process slows down. By filling the area under the eyes with hyaluronic acid, the circle is supplemented and the volume returns.

Micropuncture

Micropuncture, also known as microneedling, is a scientifically recognised and safe technique for skin improvement and rejuvenation. The treatment is done with a microneedling roller. This is a small device with 200 very fine needles of surgical quality. The fine needles in the riller stimulate the skin to produce collagen and elastin. The rolling causes microchannels to emerge, which contract and contribute to an increased absorption of active ingredients. Micropuncture is virtually painless and only takes a few minutes.

What can you expect from an Eye Regen treatment?

During the Eye Regen treatment, a small amount of blood is taken and is then centrigured. The resulting PRP is injected under the eyes together with the hyaluronic acid. This is done with a very think needle, just below the surface of the skin. We then roll the PRP and hyaluronic acid into the skin by means of micropuncture. Dark, blue circles under the eyes are reduced because blood circulation is stimulated. The treatment takes approximately thirty minutes. After the treatment, the skin under your eyes can still be red and swollen. This fades after a few hours. The result is immediately visible and the dark circles under the eyes are reduced.

Combination treatment

In some cases, a combination of treatment methods is the msot effective way of removing blue circles under the eyes. In our personal treatment advice, we will gladly tell you more about the possibilities.

Eyelid correction

If the dark circles are very deep in the skin and this causes a tired appearance, an eyelid correction can offer the solution. An eyelid correction is a surgical procedure and is not carried out in our clinic. Deep, dark circles under the eyes can be improved with fillers, but they will never permanently disappear with just a filler treatment.

An eyelid correction is performed under local anaesthesia. An incision (cut) is made in the skin that allows the excess fat tissue to be removed. The operation usually takes about one and a half hours. The first days after the operation, the skin os often blue and swollen. The incisions can be visible for weeks or months. Just as with any operation, the eyelid correction is not entirely withour risk. Infections, abnormal discolourations, or irritation may occur.

Whichever treatment we select based on your personal wishes and facial features, you can rest assured that you will receive an honest opinion from us.

What causes dark circles under the eyes?

Dark circles are often caused by a volume deficiency under the eyes. Read below how dark circles under the eyes emerge:

Lifestyle habits

Dark circles under the eyes can be related to lifestyle habits. Insufficient sleep can affect dark circles under the eyes. Some people can suffer from them after just one night of insufficient sleep or going to bed late, others have a chronic lack of sleep which causes dark circles to become visible.

Stress

Stress is often a cause of reduced sleep. This way, stress can indirectly cause an increase in the visibility of dark circles.

Hereditary

The visibility of circles under the eye scan also be genetically determined. In this case, someone even suffers from circles under the eyes when they are not suffering from fatigue.

Exercise and fresh air

Dark circles under the eyes may occur due to a lack of fresh air and sufficient exercise. This not only causes dark circles, but also stress.

Vitamins and minerals

A shortage of vitamins (C and E) and minerals in your diet can cause poor blood circulation, which gives circles a better opportunity to emerge. For instance, an iron deficiency causes paler skin, which makes circles more noticeable, and a shortage of antioxidants creates dark circles.

UV radiation

UV radiation from the sun causes your skin to look better in the short term. However, in the long term, it causes dark circles to look much worse. Due to sunlight, the skin will quickly look older and the circles will be more noticeable.

Smoking and alcohol

Smoking and alcohol affect the quality of your sleep, which results in fatigue, in turn causing circles to emerge. In addition, smoking decreases the quality of your blood vessels, which results in decreased blood circulation and the potential emergence of dark circles. Alcohol causes your skin to dry out, which generates circles and fine lines under the eyes.
