The art of refining

Last weekend, an extensive portrait of Dr. Frodo Gaymans appeared in de Volkskrant — beautifully captured by photographer Veerle Haan.

As a team, we read the piece with pride and recognition. It not only shows who Frodo is as a doctor, but also what we stand for as a clinic. For us, it was a great opportunity to reflect on the development of our profession — and our vision of modern cosmetic medicine.

From skepticism to specialization

Cosmetic medicine has undergone an enormous transformation in the past twenty years. From a profession that was viewed with skepticism to a respected specialization with its own certifications and standards. Dr. Frodo was one of the pioneers in this field, starting as a “salesman” on a moped with botox in his bag, to building an established clinic with a clear philosophy.

“I see the person, not just the frown line”

When you see Dr. Frodo in the doctor's office, one thing always stands out: he asks how you're doing first. Not out of courtesy, but out of genuine interest. Because that frown line or line around your mouth? It tells a story.

“Recently, a woman came in who was determined to get rid of her puffiness,” says Frodo. “During our conversation, it turned out that she had just gone through a tough divorce and was mainly looking for a sense of renewal. We first discussed together whether a treatment was really what she needed at that time.”

In the world of fillers and botox, it sometimes seems as if the focus is only on getting rid of wrinkles. But we are one of the growing movements of cosmetic doctors who look beyond the surface. We see the face as a means of communication that expresses our inner state.

The balance between art and science

Cosmetic medicine is a fascinating interface between science, art, and psychology. Just like a sculptor works with marble, a cosmetic doctor works with the contours and proportions of a face.

The Volkskrant article describes how Dr. Frodo's background determined this. As the son of a visual artist, he learned early to refine polyester sculptures — working hours, days and weeks to improve proportions, create clean lines and the right curves.

Marieke, our skin therapist: “What always touches me is how Dr. Frodo talks about 'the face as an expression of who you are' during training sessions. He doesn't want to change people, but rather enhance their own image.”

The art of combining

“Just giving fillers is like painting a house while the roof is leaking,” Dr. Frodo often says. And that's why we're looking at the whole picture.

When Saskia (54) came in for loss of volume in her cheeks, we saw that her skin also lacked firmness and glow. Within our SkinBoost program, we therefore combined a subtle filler treatment with a series of targeted laser sessions. The result was not only more volume, but a complete improvement in her skin quality.

This approach — bringing different techniques together — is in our DNA. Because your face deserves more than a simple one-size-fits-all solution.

Look in the mirror for yourself

The Volkskrant article candidly describes how Dr. Frodo also treats himself. It is significant that many cosmetic doctors have experience with their own treatments. It not only provides technical insight, but also forces them into the patient's position.

This experience provides more empathy and understanding of the vulnerability that comes with making decisions about one's own appearance. It makes them better doctors because they know how it feels to sit on the other side of the syringe.

The power of conscious choice

We see them regularly: people who come in with a photo of a movie star, or with extreme expectations after visiting social media. And that's exactly when our job is to be honest.

“Sometimes I just say no,” says Dr. Frodo. “Or I suggest starting with a small step first. Because a facial treatment isn't like a new haircut — it affects your identity, how the world sees you.”

The most progressive doctors in this field understand that beauty treatments can never be separate from the person as a whole. They take the time to ask questions: Why do you want this? What do you hope to achieve with it? Is this the right time and approach?

Finally: The real art

The Volkskrant article has caused a lot of controversy. We get messages from people who recognize our vision, who are happy that there is a backlash in a world where sometimes too much is done too quickly and too much.

In a society where we are flooded with filtered images of “perfection”, there is a need for a nuanced vision of beauty and aging. Maybe that's the real art: not creating a uniform ideal image, but respectfully refining what is already there.

Whether or not you're considering a treatment — we especially hope you choose based on self-knowledge and trust. And know that our door is always open for an honest conversation.
